Here's What College Science Scholars Are Doing
CSSers- We want to know what you're up to! Send Karen (kmm4f) updates & photos on what you're doing these days.
Congratulations to Sean Cantrell and Jennifer Cano, who were awarded the prestigious 2007 Goldwater Scholarship. This competitive honor is awarded to 2nd and 3rd year students pursuing degrees in science and math.
"Through the Environmental Science department's graduate-undergraduate mentoring website, I got in contact with Guan Song, a grad student, and EVSC professor Dr. Stephan DeWekker. About halfway through the semester, I started working with them on their current project, which is based on atmospheric CO2 and meteorological data from four sites in Colorado. The ultimate goal of the project is to relate topographical and weather conditions to atmospheric CO2 levels through a model. My work so far has been using the IDL programming language to write scripts that import, organize, and perform statistics on these large data sets. Next semester I will be doing similar work, but I will be paid as a research assistant by the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and receive additional independent study credit for non-paid time. Dr. DeWekker plans to be writing a scientific paper on the project for publishing by the end of the spring. Although I don't necessarily think I'm going to specialize in atmospheric science, I am interested in the modeling aspect of research and this is definitely good experience for that and just research experience in general." -Alex Ameen
“I have graduated with highest distinction from theEnvironmental Science Department. I wrote an undergrad thesis and was in thedistinguished majors program. I recently presented the results of my summerand fall research at the American society of limnology and oceanography inSanta Fe, NM. I did a poster. Right now, I am in Charlottesville workingfor Integral Yoga Natural Foods and Environmental Health News (twodifferent places). I also plan to do an internship with theCharlottesville-based environmental consulting firm, The EnvironmentalCompany. After June, I plan to leave Charlottesville and find a jobsomewhere!! I am thinking about grad school in about 1.5 years, possibly inpublic health. I’m also writing a manuscript for publication with Aaron Mills at UVA and Wayne Wurtsbaugh at Utah State University (my two research advisors).” - Leyland Del Re, 2007 (see photo, above)
Sean Cantrell just published a paper in Journal of Applied Physics, entitled "Nanoscale subsurface imaging via Resonance Difference Frequency Atomic Force Microscopy”
Rachael Beaton was selected as a Jefferson Fellow to attend the University of Virginia graduate program in Astronomy.
