University-wide
Surveys
School or Department Surveys
Alumni are
surveyed to assess their experiences, satisfaction, and achievement
of goals as students and as alumni. These surveys provide useful
feedback to programs, schools, and the University as a whole. Many
of the surveys described in this site share a core set of questions
regarding goals and priorities; academics and student life; and
career, job, and community involvement. Within learning goals, the
surveys include questions about student attainment of “core
competencies”: writing, oral communication, critical thinking,
quantitative and scientific thinking, problem-solving, and computing.
These surveys address alumni satisfaction with their skills and
knowledge in these areas, complementing the actual assessment of
skills undertaken in the competency
assessment program.University alumni will continue to be queried
every five years using the core questions, plus additional topical
questions. Additional targeted surveys of alumni may also be implemented.

about past and current surveys, go to the Surveys
section of this site.

data concerning alumni, consult the Data
Digest.
For those who
wish to develop their own alumni surveys, the Survey
Resources page provides helpful information.
University-wide
Surveys
Three University-wide
surveys—1992, 1997, and 2003—focused on undergraduate
alumni only. They collected information from alumni of all six undergraduate
schools (College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Architecture,
Commerce, Education, Engineering and Applied Science, and Nursing),
and all three surveys permitted analysis of results by school. The
Undergraduate
Experiences of University of Virginia Alumni 1992 survey assessed
the impact of UVa undergraduate education two, five, and ten years
after graduation. The
Undergraduate Alumni Survey 1997 focused largely on employment,
career path, and students’ satisfaction with educational preparation
for career. The Undergraduate
Student Relations Survey 2003 devoted a substantial number of
questions to explore the experiences and opinions of African-American
alumni. The report focuses on the experience of African-American
students. For more information on these and other alumni surveys,
see Past Surveys
by Subject.
The
Undergraduate Alumni State Council for Higher Education Survey 1997
(SCHEV) and the
SCHEV Survey 1999 also queried undergraduate alumni from the
six undergraduate schools. Required of all public colleges and universities
in Virginia, the purpose of the brief SCHEV surveys was to ask alumni
about satisfaction with the undergraduate experience, financial
aid, and employment and education after graduation. Data and reports
were submitted to SCHEV.
School
or Department Surveys
The Program
Review alumni surveys of 1996-2001 were conducted to assess
the strengths and weaknesses of each department and school under
review and to assist in formulating long range academic plans. Alumni
of both the undergraduate and graduate programs in departments undergoing
review were surveyed using separate instruments. The surveys posed
consistent questions regarding student learning goals and priorities
at UVa and afterward; satisfaction with major program of study;
education and employment since graduation; adequacy of preparation
by UVa; job satisfaction; and involvement in community affairs.
Alumni of graduate programs were asked questions geared to the graduate
student experience. Reports compared alumni responses to those from
alumni within the greater discipline or school. In all, surveys
of undergraduate alumni were conducted for 75 departments between
1996 and 2001. The Program
Review Surveys section of this site has data, questionnaires,
and reports available for undergraduate and graduate alumni surveys
conducted for program review.
The School
of Engineering Undergraduate Alumni Survey 2002 assessed SEAS
undergraduate alumni opinion regarding skill attainment and preparation
for employment. The survey was designed to support the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology re-accreditation process and
to provide specific information regarding academic program strengths
and weaknesses that could be applied to improve undergraduate programs.
Alumni were also given the opportunity to invite their employer
to take a related survey, the School
of Engineering Employer Survey 2002. Data and results were provided
to the School.
Schools often
conduct their own alumni surveys to monitor and document alumni
job, graduate school, or residency placement. While the below list
is not exhaustive, it does provide links to information gathered
from school-conducted alumni surveys.
