The purpose of the School Assessment Coordinator is to provide support for the school and its departments and programs to develop and implement outcomes assessment plans, with a primary emphasis on the direct assessment of student learning outcomes. The coordinator will help each degree-granting program, graduate and undergraduate, define their mission, goals, and most important objectives/outcomes (including student learning outcomes); develop a plan to assess whether the program’s objectives/outcomes are being met; and demonstrate that assessments results are being used for program improvement, especially with respect to student learning. While indirect assessments (e.g., surveys, interviews) are encouraged to supplement direct assessment methods, they are not sufficient indicators of student learning. The overall goal of the School Assessment Coordinator is to assist pro-grams in developing assessment plans that are both feasible and useful and that concentrate on the program’s most important learning outcomes. The School Assessment Coordinator’s work can and should support the school’s re-accreditation process.

This position would report to both the Dean and the Vice President and Provost. It is recommended that the School Assessment Coordinator be a tenure track faculty member who has a background and interest in assessment, but the appointment will be made by the Dean and approved by the Provost. It is possible to share this responsibility among more than one faculty/staff member. The School Assessment Coordinator will work in conjunction with the Dean and the Office of Institutional Assessment and Studies (IAS), the office with primary responsibility for coordinating aca-demic assessment at the University.

IAS will act as a resource and provide training for the School Assessment Coordinator, who will in turn act as an assessment resource for program faculty. The School Assessment Coordinator will assist IAS in collecting program-level assessment plans for each degree-granting program in the School. Once these plans are collected, the School Assessment Coordinator will assist IAS in providing specific feedback about the plans to departments and programs. Implementing the plans will be the responsibility of the individual programs. Convening a school assessment council/committee is recommended but not required. This council/committee could review assessment plans and results and provide feedback to programs. Its role would be strictly advisory
