IAS Reports: National Survey of Student Engagement Overview

The University of Virginia participated in the first full-scale administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) in the spring of 2000 and also participated in the springs of 2002 and 2005. UVa plans to participate in the NSSE every three years, with the next scheduled administration in spring 2008. Data gathered from these administrations are available for public viewing, and can be accessed below or by using the "by Subject" link in the pop-up navigation bar to the left.

NSSE was designed by a panel of national experts on higher education, led by Peter Ewell of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems. The survey is administered by Indiana University's Center for Survey Research, supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, and cosponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning. While the University has conducted numerous surveys of its own on student engagement, NSSE provides useful benchmarking information and comparative data from other institutions.

Data tables of all UVa NSSE results can be found on this site. Most of the tables are broken down by year (first-year v fourth-year) and various comparison groups (i.e. UVa students, Associations of America Universities Data Exchange institutions, Doctoral-Extensive institutions, and the overall NSSE sample for that year).
