Website Naming Guidelines

Unless otherwise specified, the default name for a web directory will be the U.Va. Computing ID of the requesting person. Departmental or course directory names can be requested and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. A generic web address is: http://www.web.virginia.edu/[website name]

Requesting an website name other than the web account holder's U.Va. Computing ID:

  • Names are assigned on a first-requested, first-assigned basis.

  • Names must be 4 or more characters and at least the first 4 characters must be alphabetic (so that they do not conflict with U.Va. Computing ID's).

  • U.Va. registered e-mail aliases are not allowed.

  • The name can contain only letters, digits, underscore, or the hypen. Some characters are impossible for various systems to process and will not be created.

  • The name must be nine characters or less.

  • Internal spaces are not allowed in the name ("a b c" is not an allowed name).

  • This name is meant to be specific to your site, hence, it needs to avoid being too broad. For example: It cannot be a word or phrase that has meaning to multiple departments, divisions, or schools within the University. For instance, "programdesign" is too broad to be used as an alias.

  • The name must not have multiple meanings within the broader University community. Choose a term that reflects your specific purpose(s).

  • The name cannot be the name of a class of computer workstations.

  • The name cannot be a commerical organization as the University is not allowed to support commercial interests.

Requesting a virtual host:

  • Micro Systems will, upon request, set up a host-header based virtual host pointing to the website sub-directory. The website will still be available via www.web.virginia.edu/[website name], but will also be available via the virtual host header name.

  • Host names must first be approved by the hostmaster by sending e-mail to hostmaster@virginia.edu. The hostmaster will also be the one to assign the alias to the web server's standard DNS name.
