Program Review self-studies are expected to include a
2-3 page summary of assessment activities and results, including:
| 1. |
What program and student learning
outcomes have been assessed? |
| |
|
Note: A program outcome may not be directly
related to student learning. Examples: job placement of graduates,
faculty publishing, student satisfaction with advising. A program
must report on its assessment of student learning outcomes for Program
Review. More on student learning
outcomes with examples, by discipline. |
| 2. |
What methods were used for the
assessment? |
| |
|
Example may include a survey or exit interviews of
a sample of fourth-year undergraduate students; rubric-based review
of capstone projects or comprehensive exams. |
| 3. |
Provide a brief description
of the process. |
| |
|
For example, who collected the data and analyzed
the results and who/what body examined the results and made recommendations?
Very important: :with whom were the results shared (results
that are not shared cannot be used)? |
| 4. |
What were the important findings?
|
| |
|
Were students performing as expected, or below or
above expectations? |
| 5. |
What changes/improvements were
made to the program as a result of the assessment? |
| |
|
This is the most important step in the process. Assessment
at UVa is goal-oriented and seeks to make sure that programs act on
information gathered during the review process. |
| 6. |
Provide a description of additional
assessments planned for the future. |
| |
|
What outcomes, preliminary timetable, methods should
be part of a future plan? If the plan did not yield useful information,
how can the assessment process itself be improved? |
A key characteristic of assessment, explicit in the sixth
point above, is that it is a regular, ongoing, iterative process, integrated
into established decision-making processes of the program, and not an
occasional, isolated event. As such, reports of assessment activities
will be required periodically between Program Reviews.

Review, including deadlines for different schools.
IAS' Program Review Query System
provides academic programs and schools access to the University's mainframe
institutional data. Based on SAS Internet, the system is set up to provide
programs with individual program reports, or comparative reports to other
programs/schools. No programming experience is required. To request access
to the Program Review query system, please fill out our Data
Support form. An IAS staff person will contact you within one business
day.
WEAVEonline
is also available to report ongoing assessment. WEAVE
is a web-based, secure, information-management and reporting system for
assessment purposes. Units that wish to track goals, objectives, and outcomes,
measure whether or not the unit is meeting established target levels,
and manage the data and reports resulting from its assessments, will find
WEAVE to be user-friendly and effective.
