Description: This session focused on direct and indirect approaches, including student self-reflection, and the use of rubrics in assessing comprehensive exams, research proposals, etc. Assessment of student learning at the graduate level presents unique challenges: students’ courses of study are idiosyncratic; learning is highly complex and contextual within disciplines; and many graduate programs are small, making quantitative analysis problematic. A software tool that facilitates use of rubrics for grading was previewed.

Description: This session focused on assessment techniques useful for departments in the Humanities and Fine Arts. It discussed the challenges of assessing student learning in these disciplines and presented some strategies for overcoming these challenges. Techniques for creating rubrics and using web-based survey software to enter and analyze rubric results was also presented.
