UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

REPORT OF FACULTY AWARDS

1992 - 2007

Major national and state awards to faculty have been identified through lists published on web pages of awarding organizations, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and local and University publications. Emphasis has been placed on awards which span specific fields of study, that is, awards for which faculty in multiple departments could be eligible.

For this report, research fellowships (e.g., Guggenheim Fellowships) have been considered as awards; research grants have not. Elected memberships to certain national academies have also been included; awards from dues-paying membership organizations are normally excluded. While the primary emphasis of this report is on awards won, since 1992, by University of Virginia faculty during their tenure at the University, summary data on awards won by faculty at other Virginia institutions is included for comparison purposes.

No claim is made that this report includes all major awards made to faculty in all disciplines. Suggestions of additions, revisions, etc. to this report should be directed to Martin Shank, Institutional Assessment and Studies, 1939 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903, (434) 924-6427.

COUNCIL FOR ADVANCEMENT AND SUPPORT OF EDUCATION (CASE)
PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), "a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of education for the benefit of society," annually chooses a National Professor of the Year. In 1985, CASE chose a Professor of the Year in eight target states, including Virginia. The program now includes 46 states, the District of Columbia, and four national Professors of the Year in these categories: Baccalaureate Colleges,Community Colleges, Doctoral and Research University, and Master's University and College. Nominees are chosen by peers at their institutions, then are scrutinized by two panels for their dedication to the profession of education. One winner is chosen annually for each of the states involved.  The date of the most recent award listed here is November 15, 2007.
