Methodology
The survey population was all 3,508 individuals
who accepted University of Virginia’s offer of admission at
the undergraduate level for the 2005-06 academic year.
On May 4, 2005, all respondents were sent personalized
letters signed by the Dean of Admission, Jack Blackburn. The letter
informed them of the importance and general purposes of the survey,
assured them of confidentiality, and invited them to participate.
The survey was conducted entirely over the web. Respondents were
tracked via an alphanumeric randomized respondent key, and subsequent
correspondence was conducted in two batches, the first comprised
entirely of first-time, first-year students and the second comprised
of both first-time, first-year students and transfer students. Three
email reminders were sent on May 11, 18, and 26, 2005, to the first
batch and June 2, 9, and 16, 2005, to the second batch. Three lotteries
were conducted as incentives for respondents. A total of 70 prizes
were awarded: ten $100 gift certificates, twenty $50 gift certificates,
and forty $25 gift certificates to the University of Virginia Bookstore.
When the field period ended on June 20, 2005, a
total of 2,533 first-time first-year students and 336 transfer students
had responded to this survey, reflecting response rates of 84% and
67%, respectively. At a 95% confidence level, the overall sampling
error for the survey was ± 0.8%.
