Undergraduate Newly Admitted Students Survey 2007

This survey was conducted in Spring 2007 at the request of the Office of Admission and Student Financial Services. The survey asked questions about the admission process, communications with the Admissions and Student Financial Services Offices, and students' expectations for summer orientation. The primary purpose of this year's survey was to identify the important factors influencing the decision to attend or not attend the University. In order to identify those factors, we included a battery of similar questions on both the turndowns and newly admitted student surveys. These data should prove useful in identifying the predictive factors in students who decided to attend versus those who did not decide to attend.

All 3,285 newly admitted students, first-time, first-year only, were surveyed. 2,269 responded for a response rate of 69%.

Methodology

The survey population was all 3,285 individuals who accepted University of Virginia’s offer of admission at the undergraduate level for the 2007-08 academic year.

On June 19, 2007, all respondents were sent personalized letters signed by the Dean of Admission, Jack Blackburn. The letter informed them of the importance and general purposes of the survey, assured them of confidentiality, and invited them to participate. The survey was conducted entirely over the web. Respondents were tracked via an alphanumeric randomized respondent key. Four email reminders were sent on June 27, July 11 and 25, and August 8, 2007. Two lotteries were conducted as incentives for respondents. A total of twenty $50 gift certificates to the University of Virignia bookstore were awarded.

When the field period ended on August 15, 2007, a total of 2,269 had responded to this survey, reflecting a response rate of 69%. At a 95% confidence level, the overall sampling error for the survey was ± 1.1%.

Sampling error assumes a random (representative) sample. Analysis was conducted to determine whether respondents differed from nonrespondents in important known characteristics such as gender, ethnic background, and school of enrollment. Women were overrepresented and African-Americans were underrepresented. Accordingly, the data were weighted by gender and ethnic origin to account for the difference in representation of women and ethnic minorities in the overall frequencies.
