Summer Orientation Evaluation 2007

This evaluation, conducted at the request of the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs, asked new students and their parents to evaluate various aspects of the summer orientation program. In 2007, a separate questionnaire for transfer students and their parents was developed and administered. All incoming first-year students and their parents who attended a summer orientation session were surveyed. Out of approximately 3,000 students, 1,955 responded, including 194 transfers. Out of approximately 4,000 parents, 1,563 responded, including 71 transfers.

Methodology

The population of this evaluation was all students who attended summer orientation in 2006 and their parents. All incoming first-year students and their parents were provided questionnaires.

The paper scantron survey was administered by the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs, scanned by ITC and results tabulated and reported by IAS. 1,955 responses were collected from the students, for an overall response rate of 65%. At a 95% confidence level, the sampling error for first-time, first-year students was ±1.5%. The transfer student sampling error (n=194) is ±5.0%. 1,563 responses had been received from the parents, for an overall response rate of 39%. At a 95% confidence level, the overall sampling error was ±2.0%. The transfer parent sampling error (n=71) is ±11.0%. Responses to questions that were not answered by all respondents have higher sampling errors, especially if a significant proportion of the sample did not answer the question.

Questions regarding the administration of the survey, the questionnaire, or the results can be directed to Jonathan Schnyer, Associate Director and Assessment Coordinator, Office of Institutional Assessment and Studies, P.O.
