Information Technology & Communication hosted the Office Technology Conference 2005: Choices on June 22 at Newcomb Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for all office professionals, including faculty, managers, supervisors and administrative staff, as well as technical and computer professionals.

Keynote Speaker: TheSpecial Investigator Kyle Williams and Honorary Deputy U. S. Marshall Shaquille O'Neal day will began with a keynote address by Special Investigator, Kyle Williams, from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. Investigator Williams spoke about 'Child Exploitation Through the Internet', a subject of interest to us all in our age of technology.

About Investigator Williams: He is active in Operation Blue Ridge Thunder, an organization that works "...to apprehend perpetrators, protect potential victims, and educate parents, teachers and children about Internet saftey...". (An excerpt from Operation Blue Ridge Thunder Website.)

Investigator Williams works with NBA All-Star Shaquille O'Neal who was recently named an Honorary Deputy U. S. Marshal and is a Reserve Deputy with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. Mr. O'Neal is active in Operation Blue Ridge Thunder working with the Safe Surfin' Foundation that strives to "...educate children, teens and parents about the dangers of online predators...". Next Generation Web Design: Presented by Keith Donnelly, ITC Publication & Communication
Need to update your website? Still using the <FONT> tag? Join Keith for a tour of the newest tools and techniques in a web design, including XHTML, CSS and DHTML, and how to use them to improve your site's look, feel and maintainability.

 

Using the Internet from Home: Panel - Paula Falk, Madison Hall; Walter Underwood, Clemons Library and Tom Spraggins, ITC-ACHS and Moderated by Anne Lind, ITC
What are the options for connecting to the Internet from your home? Do you use a modem to dialup through the telephone line? What is DSL? What does a cable modem do? Create Word Documents With Style: Presented by Cassandra Truzy, Darden School of Business, Admissions Office
Join Cassandra Truzy in this session as she demonstrates how to create styles and copy styles to other Word documents. Cassandra will also show you formatting techniques to make documents look professional and demonstrate how to create forms and templates.

 

Conquer Your Files: Presented by Walter Underwood, Clemons Library

iPhoto comes installed on any Macintosh computer purchased within the past couple of years. If you download pictures from the Web, receive photo from friends or take photos with digital cameras, then this session is for you. Join Jay as he demonstrates how photos can be easily edited and touched up and how iPhoto can help you keep a large collection of photos organized. No presentation available.

 

Spyware: Internet Plague: Presented by Karen McDowell, ITC
Who controls your computer? The phenomenon known variously as "spyware," "adware" and/or "malware" has grown exponentially in the past year and is now swamping our computer systems, much like email spam but significantly worse. Spyware is also a serious problem affecting our national security. Join Karen as she demonstrates how to identify and remove spyware which are the critical steps in securing computers and networks enabling each of us to complete our work safely and efficiently.

 

My UVa Portal: Presented by Sandy German and Trisha Gordon, ITC
A portal is a single sign on Web gateway to frequently used services, tools, applications, and information that empowers users to become active consumers of information specific to their needs.
My UVa Portal rolled out in April and is moving along with enhancements and greater ways to organize one's personal information. Project co-chairs Trisha Gordon and Sandy German will talk about the project and its plans for the future. No presentation available.

 

ImageNow: Presented by Tracy Scharer from ITC, Charles Huffman and Janis Rapp, School of Nursing
Are you thinking about implementing ImageNow in your department? Would you like to know more about the basic concepts behind this innovative technology? Then this session is for you! Tracy will talk about the business and financial startup. Charles will fill us in on what it takes to protect sensitive data behind the scenes and how the School of Nursing structured their database. Janis will provide us with an end-user perspective of the system.

Understanding the Value of .NET: Presented by Hank Farlow, Microsoft and Rick Tavenner, Office of the University Registrar
What is .NET? .NET is not just for the developer but is integrated across the Microsoft platform.
This session gives users an understanding of Microsoft XML Web services strategy that allows the user to connect information, people, systems, and devices through software. This includes both client and server operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Rick Tavenner, Office of the University Registrar, will demonstrate a .NET system developed in the Registrar’s office.

 

Adobe Acrobat: Presented by Michael Ouslander, Adobe Systems, Inc.
This session will cover the new feature enhancements of Adobe Acrobat 7. Join Michael as he demonstrates how Acrobat and PDF are being used as tools to enhance communication and create an Internet form. Michael can also be persuaded to show how to convert a Word document to a .pdf file.

Your configuration settings and incoming mail are stored on the Central Mail Server (CMS). Access to your mail is via a Web interface.
